When prompted with the task of designing a tailored jacket using inspiration from any historical time period, I thought of the oversized Balenciaga jackets from the 1950’s. When looking at these jackets and other oversized looks from the 50’s it made me think of comfort and how we use clothing as a security blanket. I began to look at organic shapes and art that had organic aspects to it. I came across artist duo Raw Color’s exhibit for Dutch Invertuals where they used flat foam and pastel colors to create unique and abstract sculptures. The look and colors of these sculptures gave me a calming feeling and they made me want to reach out and touch them. With this in mind I wanted to reciprocate that feeling in my coat designs, a soft and comfy oversized look that brings the wearer a sense of security.
